Halloween Costume Contest 2009

I have made a lovely slideshow with all of the pictures I took at the event. If you want to view it and it is blocked, click on the banner at the top of the page and click "Allow Blocked Content".

We had such a great turnout this year for our Halloween Costume Contest! Saturday, October 16th, was a very busy day for some of the hard-working costume makers. They put a lot of effort into making their contributions, and it really showed!

First Place: Lucy the Pirate

The Oregon Ferret Shelter Costume Contest just wouldn't be the same without Lisa Harris and her fabulous ferret-sized creations. Every year, she astounds and amazes us with the ideas and outfits she comes up with. And this year was no exception.

Lucy the half polecat half angora super-cheeky girl fert was all dressed up in a wonderfully detailed pirate costume. It was ideal timing too, as we had all just celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day. Lucy, even though she glared murderously at us, shooting daggers with every glance, still put on quite a show with her gorgeous costume, which even included a tiny cutlass for her to stab us with! Very nice!

Also, even though Lisa passed Lucy off to Nori Nettleton for pictures, Lucy still stayed motionless for her photo shoot. Even though I have seen this countless times before, it still continues to amaze me every time I see it. I just don't know how Lisa gets her furkids to stay in their costumes! I thought maybe Lisa had some kind of magic touch, but Nori was able to hold Lucy with no problem, so it can't be something about Lisa. It must be a trade secret kind of thing. Maybe whiskey? It would definitely be piratey and in-character.

Second Place: Wolverine the Cowboy

Second place was taken by the ever-photogenic Wolverine and Patti Riggert. Patti brought her clever cowboy costume to the shelter, but she didn't have a ferret to go in it (she just lost her sweetie-pie ferret Bumble, who had won last year's competition as Bumble the Vampire Slayer). So she needed to rent a shelter ferret for the competition.

Fortunately, the surprisingly good-natured Wolverine the Angora was up and ready to fill in. He struck a pose as the costume was placed upon his heavy hide and he was paraded around the room.

The only problem with his outfit was that Wolverine was so very very hairy that some parts of his costume were obscured by the fuzz. Fortunately, we were able to take several pictures of the costume from several angles so that all would be revealed. You can check out the entirety of his costume, along with his complete shame, in the slide show above.

Third Place: The Two Witches

The third place winner was a two-ferret combo owned by Walt and Barbara Whitson. These little sables were so patient with us! They let us take many many photographs of them while wearing hats with wigs.

Now, I don't know if you have ever tried to keep a wig on a ferret. When it comes to headgear, a ferret's head is apparently the most slippery surface known to man. Seriously, we could make millions on their secret. However, somehow, these two furkids managed to keep their outfits on for a good twenty minutes through the photographing and the judging. Weird.

There were many other participants in the contest. There was Thermann Mermann the Bat, Spud the Pumpkin, and Kai's little adventurer. There was Sugar the Vampire, who had a gorgeous costume complete with bloodstains around her sharp little teeth -- YIKES! The judging process was a combination of barely controlled chaos punctuated by random peals of laughter as one ferret or another would let its displeasure be known, usually by giving soulful looks that spoke of long-suffering torment. However, there was just no mercy to be found until the judging was over. Sorry little fuzzes!

In addition, we were given some delicious eats by many participants in our potluck. The most notable contribution was the spooky punch provided by James Lee -- with DRY ICE! And lychees that looked like eyeballs! Oooooooo!

Thanks to all for their fantastic contributions! It made for one very memorable Halloween.
